NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA – A retired couple who won a Lotto 6/49 jackpot of $11.2 million in July have given away $10.2 million of the winnings after they helped out their family and decided they had no need for such a large amount of money.

Allen and Violet Large, aged 75 and 78, said when they won they prize that they had no major plans for the money apart from that they would like to be able to take care of their family and save a tiny proportion for themselves for a rainy day. They did that and decided to give 98 per cent of the money they won to churches, hospitals, fire departments and the Red Cross.

Mrs. Large had been undergoing treatment for cancer at the time of the win and she said that she felt lucky that she was now well enough to help others. Some of the winnings they gave away went to the hospitals where she was treated.

Describing the huge windfall as a “big headache”, Mr. Large went on to say “That money we won was nothing. We have each other.” The self-confessed simple country folk are very happy that they were able to donate such a large amount of money to good causes and are very happy with their life as it is.

With a home they are content in and a reliable car and everything they need to continue their way of life the couple said that “you can’t buy happiness”.

The Large’s said that they had had to put their telephone off the hook as it had been ringing constantly with well-wishers from all over the country and members of the press looking for a story. They added that they were surprised that their philanthropy had become such a worldwide news story.

The winning ticket they had was for a Lotto 6/49 draw made on July 14th. The couple have no plans to stop playing the lottery as they said they play for fun.
