Seventeen year old wins £250k, pays off family mortgage
EAST GRINSTEAD, UK – A 17 year old trainee chef who earns just £8,000 per year has won £250,000 from a £2 scratch card and paid off mortgage arrears on his family home, which he shares with his mother and younger brother.
Joe Hollick was collecting a £4 prize at a local petrol station when he decided to reinvest the profits in another instant game and was lucky enough to scoop the top prize.
The elated teenager told the Daily Mail, “I couldn’t believe it when I saw it was £250,000 pounds. I ran to my mate’s house and banged on the door to show him. I then phoned Mum to tell her but she wouldn’t believe me so I had to jump in the car and go straight home to show her. I am really happy to be able to help Mum with the mortgage. We had actually sold the house and were having to move which none of us wanted to but now my win means we can stay put.”
His mother was about to sell the house as she had lost her job and the mortgage was in arrears. Her son’s generosity, showing maturity beyond his years, could not have made her prouder. She said, “I could not have been prouder of Joe when he decided to pay off the arrears with the mortgage company. It was one of his first thoughts and such a lovely thing to do for his family. I don’t think it has really sunk in yet.”
Despite still having a bank balance that most 17 year olds could only dream of, Joe Hollick is determined to continue as a trainee chef and vowed to be as sensible as he could be with the money.
