OTTOWA – Ten workers at a Canadian manufacturing plant won a $7m (£4.34m) lottery jackpot hours after discovering that they had lost their jobs.

The lucky few were members of an 18-strong syndicate of employees at SMART Technologies, which announced layoffs of approximately 200 workers on the same day as their big win.

SMART is relocating to Mexico and had to lay off around two-thirds of their Ottowa based employees. Hundreds of former employees will unfortunately not benefit from a lottery win.

One winner Colin Willard said on CBC News: “I said, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to win the lottery before we leave SMART?’, and bing, the next day we win it.”

“I looked at the numbers and I had to ask somebody to come and take a look at them because I wasn’t sure if I was reading it right and she said, ‘Oh, you got them all’, and I started to shake, vibrate in my seat.”

The 18 winners will receive just under $400,000 each, more than enough to tide them over before they look for new employment!

Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation confirmed this week that the winning ticket was shared by a group of people from Ottawa, but refused to comment on their identities until a verification process was completed.
