As far as the printing and manufacture of scratch cards is concerned there are three major players in the industry. Each of the three companies is based in North America and together they produce the majority of the scratch cards in the world.

Pollard Banknote (Canada), Scientific Games Corporation (USA) and Gtech Printing Corporation (USA) are the three major producers and suppliers of scratch cards throughout the world.

Scientific Games Corporation

Scientific Games was the company founded by the inventors of scratch cards, John Koza and Daniel Bower. Having been at the forefront of scratchcard technology, it is no surprise that Scientific Games continues to be one of the leaders in the industry.

The company has a worldwide staff of over 5,500 and with annual revenue of $1billion it is one of the largest lottery gaming producers on the planet.

With production facilities in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia, Scientific Games Corporation clearly has no intention of losing a share in any part of the international market.

The company has the capacity to print nearly 40billion instant scratch card tickets per year.

Continuing investment in new technology, with $45million worth of brand-new printing presses recently purchased means they now have the three newest presses in the industry.

Scientific Games is the primary instant scratch card provider for 8 out of the top 10 U.S. state lotteries. It serves every state lottery in some manner. Scientific Games Corporation provides scratch cards to nearly 70 lotteries all over the world.

2008 highlights for the company include: 15 year contract to establish and operate a scratch card printing facility for the China Sports Lottery, a 3 year contract to exclusively produce scratch cards for NSW Lotteries and a 3 year contract with Sachsen-Anhalt lottery in Germany to supply instant tickets.

Pollard Banknote

Pollard Banknote is another large company, which provides scratch cards and other lottery products and services to over 45 different lotteries worldwide. Notable lotteries include; New York State Lottery, British Columbia Lottery Corporation, De Lotto (Netherlands) and An Post National Lottery (Ireland).

The company runs six facilities around North America and Asia in which around 1,300 people are employed.

With a production capacity of 13billion scratch cards, Pollard Banknote is certainly a major player in the industry.

The company produces highly secure scratch cards, which are capable of withstanding exposure to water, humidity, chemicals and chemical vapours.

Sales revenue in 2008 was $178million.

Gtech Printing Corporation

Gtech Printing Corporation produce scratch cards for lotteries all over the world. The staff collectively brings nearly 500years of lottery experience to the company.

Gtech is continuously looking for new ways to improve its manufacturing processes. With a new printing press in progress, enhanced systems and fully modernised pre-press technology Gtech is at the forefront of scratch card printing technology.

They have developed the latex that the consumer scratches off for a smoother scratch.

With a printing capacity of 3billion it is clear that Gtech, although relatively new in the industry, is still a key player in scratchcard production.

Priding itself on the high standard of product it manufactures, Gtech run quality control checks every 7minutes to ensure every card produced is perfect.

Recent customers include the lotteries of; Hungary, Jamaica, North Carolina, California and Ecuador.
