EDMONTON, AB – A Mayerthorpe, Alberta  couple are the toast of the town after they scooped a CA$16million Lotto 6/49 jackpot prize. The winners, Gail and Stanley Knapp brought some much needed joy to a town which has had some bad experiences recently.

The small town of Mayerthorpe, around 80 miles north-west of Edmonton has had more than its fair share of tragedies occur in the past few years. In March 2005, four Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers were gunned down by James Roszko. And, last July the local hockey arena was razed to the ground in a fire.

So, they news of a major Lotto 6/49 win has brought some joy to the residents of this small Alberta town.

An employee of the store where the winning ticket was sold told the Edmonton Sun, ““It’s nice to be put on the map for something else. The staff here is all happy and customers, too. It’s nice to see.”

Even the town’s Mayor, Doug McDermid was happy to say how pleased he and the whole town were for the Knapp’s. He said, “People are just so happy Stan and Gail won that lottery. They’re a super couple. They deserve it.”

The jackpot win is by far the biggest lottery prize won by anyone in the town. The store employee said she believed the biggest previous win was for CA$54,000.

The Knapp’s have no plans to move from the area or make any lavish purchases. They have three grandchildren and many other family members who they intend to share the prize money with.

The store employee captured the feeling around the town well, by saying, “The town is all excited, residents are happy it’s happened to that couple and family. You’re still envious, but it happened to a nice couple.”
