SOFIA, BULGARIA – Bulgarian Lottery operators yesterday announced that the 45 day deadline for the winning ticket holder to claim the €3.4million jackpot has passed and that no money will be paid out.

This unfortunate news comes after a record number of tickets were sold during a frenzied period before the draw was made, when people from neighbouring countries such as Greece, Macedonia and Romania crossed the border to buy a chance to win a record prize. The jackpot grew to the record rollover amount after many weeks of no winner.

Bulgaria is the poorest country in the European Union and this record jackpot gave hope of a new, better life to millions of people. The fact that the winner could not be found in time is very poor.

The chief of the Bulgarian Lottery, Ivo Tonev said that half of the money will be returned to the lottery’s coffers and the other half will go towards grants for various Bulgarian sports federations.
