Toronto couple claim $15m Lotto 6/49 jackpot

TORONTO – From Toronto Star – Bob Maggiacomo and his wife play the lottery every week. And every Sunday morning, Maggiacomo wakes up around 7 a.m. to check his numbers in the newspaper. His numbers didn’t come up this past Sunday, but the winning numbers looked suspiciously similar to the usual six his wife plays: a combination of their birth dates.

When he looked at his wife’s ticket, he was right. All six numbers matched. He ran upstairs and woke her up.

“Hey millionaire, come look at this!” Maggiacomo said to his wife, Eleanor Canavan. She didn’t believe him, so they double-checked online. Sure enough, the couple had won $15,347,907.80 from Lotto 6/49.

“My wife’s been playing those same numbers for 30 years,” Maggiacomo told the Star Tuesday night, just before leaving for a nearby restaurant to celebrate the win with up to 40 friends and family members.

The North York couple didn’t really believe they were millionaires until they had the giant cheque in hand Tuesday morning. On Sunday morning, the couple signed the winning ticket and left it on their bedroom bureau, in plain view, and waited until the prize centre opened.

But because it was Easter, they had to wait an extra day before it opened on Tuesday. Sleep was hard to come by Sunday and Monday nights.

“I’m semi-retired. Wait a minute, as of today, I’m retired. As of today, we’re both retired,” Maggiacomo said with a hearty laugh.

Both Maggiacomo and Canavan were ecstatic, despite their stern expressions in their lotto-winning picture.

“I want a small house with a big garage,” Maggiacomo said. “I’m into hot rods, have one myself and want to get some more.”

The couple also plans to travel, invest some of their winnings and help out their two grown children.

“What do you do with that much money?” Maggiacomo asked. “We want to enjoy it, isn’t that what it’s all about?”
