Illinois Lottery tickets soon to be available online

CHICAGO, IL – The Illinois Lottery has made great progress in its online lottery project and soon residents of the state will be able to purchase lottery tickets without leaving their computer.

With the possibility of a smartphone app as well as a website to buy tickets the Illinois Lottery could receive a much needed boost in revenue with the new, highly convenient point of sale. Players will be able to buy tickets for all their favourite draw games including Mega Millions and Lotto.

“Research suggests there is an enormous market,” Illinois Lottery director Michael Jones said. “We think we’re going to be able to start selling tickets at the end of March.”

The size of the market remains to be seen, but officials say online sales when a big jackpot is on the line could mean as many as 500,000 additional players will buy tickets for the draw through the internet.

The plans for an online lottery in Illinois have been around for a while and a successful pilot two years ago seemed set to give Illinois residents a chance to play lottery online sooner than this March. There have been legislatory problems however, with federal government only approving plans in December 2011.

Although there have been some complaints from convenience store owners about their potential loss of revenue the feeling in the state has generally been positive. Rather than reducing convenience store market for lottery tickets, the online market looks likely to appeal to a different customer.
