Cancer patient wins $50k scratch prize
NEOSHO, Mo. – A cancer patient from Missouri who was given a few scratch-off tickets as a Mother’s Day present got an extra gift of $50,000 from the state lottery as one of the tickets turned out to be a big winner.
Jerry Woods, the husband of the winner, put three tickets into a surprise Mother’s Day card for his wife, Tonda, who has been fighting cancer for three years now.
The whole family was present when Tonda scratched off the tickets. Initially it was thought that she had just won $20, but after help from other family members, the ticket was shown to be worth $50,000! “That’s a big difference”, said Jerry Woods.
The prize money will go to hospital bills which have piled up. The family recevived some help a couple of years ago but the bills keep on coming.
Mr. Woods said, “Cancer gets pretty expensive. We need to put a roof on the house and I guess I’ll do that.”
Winning now is tough. An infection is keeping Tonda in bed and visitors are limited.
Because of the size of the prize the ticket has to be verified against fraud and the family will not get the money for two weeks.
Jerry Woods took the week off work to be with his wife and the win has really perked her up. Her family are very hopeful that this good news will make her feel better very soon.
