Retired Welsh couple scoop £100k scratch card prize

BRYNMAWR, WALES – A retired couple who used to run a British Legion club were the toast of their old Valleys club yesterday after scooping £100,000 on a lottery scratchcard.

The couple, who retired 18 months ago after running Brynmawr’s Royal British Legion Club for 17 years, said their good fortune wasn’t a complete surprise.

Ann said that she had a premonition that she was going to win. “I just had a feeling that the purple ticket was for me – that I was going to win.”

Mrs Phillips, 64, said: “I had three £100,000s. I just went 3, 2, 1, and we all started screaming! The car was bouncing up and down in the car park.”

The couple had been living on a pension of around £180 per week and said this money would go a long was to making their and their family’s life comfortable. Mr Phillips, 68, said: “Before, we have always had to think can we afford to do this, can we afford to do that? But there will be no worries any more.”

The couple, who have been married for 45 years, will also give some of the cash to their two children, five grandchildren, and two new great-grandchildren, after granddaughter Natasha gave birth to twins Joshua and Jayden Price on Monday night.
