Arkansas Lottery Controller hands in resignation

LITTLE ROCK, AR – The top fiscal officer for the Arkansas lottery, Phillip Miley, has resigned from his post after criticism of him and his role after a critical audit.

A resignation letter from Mr. Miley said he and his wife have decided to return home. Miley worked for the lottery since July 2009, did not return messages seeking comment. His resignation will come into effect on September 9th.

Lottery Commissioner Bruce Engstrom said he doesn’t know why Miley resigned. He also believes that Miley should never have been hired in the first place.

Engstrom said the resignation allows the commission to search for an employee with the knowledge and skills needed to prepare financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles for governmental entities.

Miley was criticized by some lawmakers and lottery commissioners after a state auditor announced in November that it appeared lottery staff members didn’t know how to prepare the lottery’s year-end financial statements in accordance with accounting principles required by state law.
